Hammered Leaf & Flower Printing

30 Minutes | Beavers,Cubs | Outdoors

  • Flowers or leaves to print
  • Watercolor or other rough acid-free paper
  • Hammer
  • Chopping Board
  • Paper towel (kitchen roll)
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Tweezers or toothpicks
  • Safety Goggles

  1. Go for a walk or into the garden to find leaves and flowers to create your masterpiece
  2. You are looking for leaves and flowers that are brightly coloured
  3. The leaves need to not be too dry, you won’t get a print, or too juicy, or they will smudge
  4. Please make sure if you are picking leaves or flowers from someone’s garden you get permission first
  5. Set up your work area and place your chopping board on your work surface – this is to protect your worktop when you hammer
  6. If your chopping board has a rough surface, put it in a paper bag or a sandwich bag to make it smooth
  7. Take your flowers and leaves and trim off any chunky or soft bits off of the plants and arrange them on your paper
  8. You can tape them down to stop them moving around on the paper when you hammer
  9. Take your 2 or 4 pieces of paper towel and place them over your flowers/ leaves
  10. Time to start hammering! Take your hammer and start making, small even taps across your paper towel
  11. This will set the flowers or leaves in place
  12. Continue to hammer evenly across the paper
  13. The easiest way to do this is to hammer in rows so you are sure you got every single bit of your plants/ leaves
  14. Carefully take the paper towel off your working area
  15. If you can’t see complete shapes on the paper towel, then you will need to go back to hammering – it would mean you may have not hammered evenly
  16. Once you are happy that you have captured the whole flower or leaf, peel the paper towel off the top
  17. Slowly and carefully peel the flowers/ leaves off the paper
  18. Ta Da – you now have your print!
  19. Why not try different plants or flowers or arrange different patterns to make different designs

  • Be careful not to hit your fingers with the hammer and do not work on a glass surface!
  • Always remain aware of your surroundings and follow local COVID-19 advice, including the Hands / Face / Space / Ventilation guidance.
